Does hGH Cause Breast Cancer?

No, there is no scientific evidence that human growth hormone (hGH) causes breast cancer. In fact, research suggests that the opposite may be true – that hGH can potentially reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by boosting the immune system.

The association between hGH and breast cancer has been speculated since the 1980s. This was due to an observed correlation between abnormally high levels of estrogen and breast cancer in postmenopausal women with acromegaly – a condition of excessive growth hormone production by the pituitary gland.

However, studies conducted since then have found little evidence to support this claim. In fact, one study published in 2002 demonstrated the potential for hGH therapy to actually protect against estrogen-dependent cancers like breast cancer by increasing circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).

Another study published in 2007 looked at two groups of post-menopausal women – one with acromegaly and one without – and found no significant difference in the incidence of breast cancer between them. The authors concluded that hGH does not seem to increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.

In addition, a large observational study conducted in 2011 discovered that women who had received recombinant human growth hormones (rhGH) for medical reasons such as infertility or short stature had similar age-adjusted rates of malignant neoplasms to those who had not received treatment. It also determined that rhGH recipients seemed less likely to develop malignant neoplasms than nonrecipients, suggesting a possible protective effect from rhGH on malignancy development.

Given all this evidence, it appears there is no real link between hGH and an increased risk of developing breast cancer. In fact, some studies suggest that hGH can even reduce your chances of getting it!
