Menopause and postmenopause are two distinct life stages for women. Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years, while postmenopause follows menopause, when any lingering symptoms have subsided and hormone production has leveled out.
Menopause occurs naturally when a woman has not had a menstrual cycle for 12 months in a row. This can happen at any age between 40-60 years old, but it typically occurs around age 50. During this time, estrogen levels decline in the body, resulting in physical and emotional side effects such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and mood changes. Doctors will usually diagnose menopause after 12 months have gone by without menstruation.
Postmenopause typically follows menopause, once any lingering symptoms have dissipated and hormone production has returned to normal levels. When in postmenopause, women often experience an increased risk of certain medical conditions due to changing hormonal levels in addition to aging. These include heart disease, osteomylitis (weakening of bones) and incontinence.
