What is hormone replacement called?

Written by Thomas Anderson - February 23, 2023

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the treatment of menopausal symptoms with synthetic hormones. The two most common types of HRT are estrogen-only and combined estrogen-progestin therapy.

Symptoms Treated by Hormone Replacement Therapy

  • hot flashes
  • night sweats
  • vaginal dryness or pain during intercourse
  • osteoporosis
  • mood swings
  • irritability
  • depression
  • anxiety

Types of Hormone Replacement Therapy

  • Estrogen-only therapy: Estrogen is the hormone most commonly prescribed for women who have had a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus). Progestin is not needed because there is no risk of endometrial cancer in women without a uterus.

Combined estrogen and progestin therapy: Progestin is added to estrogen therapy in women who still have their uterus. The combination of estrogen and progestin reduces the risk of endometrial cancer.
