Does BHRT Cause Weight Gain?
The short answer is, it depends. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) has been linked to both reduced and increased weight in some cases. It’s important to approach this question from the perspective of individual cases and recognize that not every person’s experience with BHRT will be the same.
At its core, BHRT involves the use of hormones which are chemically identical to the hormones naturally produced by the body. This helps to address hormonal imbalances through providing a simplified version of the body’s own hormones. One potential benefit of using BHRT is weight regulation in those experiencing an imbalance.
In most cases, hormone imbalances occur because either too much or not enough of one particular hormone is being produced. This can lead to fluctuations in body weight due to changes in metabolism, appetite, energy levels and other factors. When hormones are balanced, these fluctuations should start to become less noticeable over time as each hormone works together in harmony with all others. In this sense, it may be possible for BHRT to help prevent weight gain or even promote a gradual loss depending on individual circumstances.
On the other hand, if hormones are supplemented beyond what the body would naturally create, it may have an impact on overall metabolism. If too much of a single hormone or group of hormones is introduced into the system then there may be additional stress placed on certain organs or systems leading to general fatigue and potentially an increase in weight gain over time as well as other health complications such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. For this reason, it’s important that any use of supplemental hormones be monitored closely by a medical professional who can adjust dosages accordingly if needed.
As with any form of hormonal therapy, there can be risks associated with BHRT if not done correctly or without proper monitoring over time due to potential side effects on other systems within your body. The best way forward depends entirely on your own individual situation and should be discussed with your doctor before beginning any type of treatment such as BHRT so that you can ensure it is right for you personally.
